Chapter Eleven

Start talking

Addie

I’d been sitting at Starbucks for a couple of hours, using their Wi-Fi and my crappy old laptop to look up various law enforcement agencies to try to figure out who to contact. I could reach out to the local police, but that’s what I’d done back in Chicago, and it hadn’t worked out well for me. Calling the FBI would probably be better, but it felt surreal and something that only happened in movies. Perhaps hiring a lawyer would be the best thing to start with. If I found someone with experience in similar cases, they would know what to do? Except, I hadn’t done anything wrong, so that felt weird too.

I went home frustrated about my lack of progress and with a profound desire to do something, so I stopped on the way and bought a cheap prepaid phone to use once I figured out who to contact. Google had told me that this was a good thing to have, and I didn’t activate it, but I would once I’d figured out how. I should also create a list of potential contacts to investigate further, which was another thing I wasn’t entirely sure how to do, but I hoped Google could tell me that too.

Someone must be able to help in a way that would be safe for me.

I had to believe that because I wanted to stay in Hark Falls, but it was more than that.

Never being wholly at ease was wearing on me. Things were manageable when I was in the Roadhouse or with the Cascadia men, and I relaxed a bit when Finn was around, but it wasn’t enough.

I wanted to feel free and not just stumble through life waiting for the next shitty thing to hit me.

And yeah.

I really wanted to stay because of Finn.

So, I’d put on another goddamned baseball cap, Emma had an enormous supply of slightly ridiculous-looking sunglasses, and I’d borrowed Momo’s car this time. Several of the other ladies in the book club had offered, though, so I’d use Janelle’s or Tina’s and find another Starbucks somewhere a bit further away, in downtown Seattle perhaps, where I could continue searching for a way out.

Perhaps I could ask Finn or Milo some general questions? I wasn’t sure if either of them knew how to deal with law enforcement agencies, but they might. If I kept my questions high level and moved a couple of states away once I got the ball rolling, my friends in Hark Falls would be safe, and then I might come back later.

Yes, I decided. Figure out who to call, move away, sort shit out, come back.

That sounded like a plan.

Kind of.

It felt good to finally have a starting point, even if I hadn’t actually achieved anything yet, so I smiled when I walked up to the house. That smile faltered quickly because the front porch was full of men, and they didn’t look as if they’d stopped by for coffee and snickerdoodles.

“Babe,” Finn said. “Living room.
